The short version
The China → US West Coast lane is one of our most established Trans-Pacific services. Multiple direct sailings per week to LA / LGB; weekly direct calls to OAK, SEA, and TIW. We handle booking, drayage, export customs, ocean transport, US customs clearance, and final delivery. Amazon FBA prep, DDP door-to-door, and dangerous-goods bookings are all standardized workflows. 1. Route Overview
China to US West Coast (USWC) is one of the busiest export lanes globally, carrying e-commerce inventory, furniture, electronics, textiles, toys, and sporting goods. Mighty Shipping has operated the Trans-Pacific corridor since 2000 — 26 years of continuous service — with active space allocations from MSC, Maersk, CMA CGM, ONE, ZIM, HMM, Yang Ming, Evergreen, and 25+ additional carriers.
We dispatch from Qingdao, Shanghai, Ningbo, Shenzhen (Yantian/Shekou), and other major China ports. USWC capacity covers multiple FCL sailings per week plus a weekly LCL consolidation, with flexible mix-and-match across carriers based on rate, reliability, and equipment availability.
2. Destination Ports & Coverage
We serve all major USWC ports — FCL direct calls everywhere; LCL deconsolidates at LA/LGB:
| Port | State / UN/LOCODE | Direct / Transshipment | Typical Cargo |
|---|---|---|---|
| Los Angeles | California / USLAX | Direct | Amazon FBA, furniture, textiles, e-commerce gateway |
| Long Beach | California / USLGB | Direct | Same port complex as LA — oversized cargo, furniture |
| Oakland | California / USOAK | Direct | Northern California & Bay Area distribution, agri reefer |
| Seattle | Washington / USSEA | Direct | Pacific Northwest (PNW) distribution |
| Tacoma | Washington / USTIW | Direct | Same port complex as Seattle, select carrier rotations |
* Direct vs. transshipment depends on the carrier's current rotation. Transshipment via Busan / Yokohama / Kaohsiung adds 3–7 days.
3. Typical Transit Times & Frequency
| Destination | Direct / Transshipment | Transit (reference) | Weekly Frequency (reference) |
|---|---|---|---|
| Los Angeles (LA) | Direct | ~14–18 days | 3–5 sailings/week |
| Long Beach (LGB) | Direct | ~14–18 days | 3–5 sailings/week |
| Oakland (OAK) | Direct | ~15–20 days | 1–2 sailings/week |
| Seattle (SEA) | Direct | ~15–20 days | 1–2 sailings/week |
| Tacoma (TIW) | Direct | ~16–20 days | 1 sailing/week |
* Reference ranges only — actual transit varies with carrier rotation, weather, port congestion, and California drayage capacity. Ask your account manager for live schedules.
4. Carriers & Alliances
The major carriers running China → USWC and their alliance groupings (subject to industry restructuring):
- Gemini Cooperation (Maersk + Hapag-Lloyd): Hub-and-spoke network with industry-leading schedule reliability
- Premier Alliance (ONE + HMM + Yang Ming): Strong USWC capacity
- MSC Standalone: Independent operator since 2025 with multiple direct USWC strings
- OCEAN Alliance (CMA CGM + COSCO + Evergreen): Largest single Trans-Pacific alliance
- ZIM: Express Trans-Pacific strings (ZX2, ZX3) optimized for transit time
We hold space agreements across most of the above, allowing flexible rate-vs.-transit-vs.-reliability optimization per shipment.
5. Cargo Types & Packing Notes
- Amazon FBA inbound: Direct FCL to California fulfillment centers (LAX9, ONT8, MOR1, SBD1, etc.), or LCL pool followed by LTL trucking
- Furniture & home goods: 40HQ / 45HQ preferred; CARB formaldehyde compliance required
- Consumer electronics: FCC / ETL / UL certifications; lithium-content items need UN38.3
- Textiles & apparel: UFLPA cotton-origin documentation, quota / EPA registration where applicable
- Toys & sporting goods: CPSC / ASTM F963 compliance
- Class 9 dangerous goods (lithium batteries): MSDS, UN38.3, DG packing certification; select carriers accept DG bookings
6. Incoterms & Service Scope
- DDP (Delivered Duty Paid): End-to-end: origin pickup → ocean → US customs → trucking to FBA / 3PL / commercial / residential address. You supply cargo and ship-to info.
- DDU / DAP: Delivered to port, consignee handles US clearance — typical for B2B trade flows
- FOB / EXW / FCA / CIF: All standard Incoterms supported per buyer-seller agreement
- LCL consolidation: Weekly fixed sailing to LA, CFS deconsolidation, optional onward trucking
7. Rate Drivers & Market Factors
USWC rates are seasonal and shock-prone. Key factors:
- Peak season: Christmas restocking (July–October) drives carrier GRIs; post-Lunar-New-Year (Feb–March) sees LSI/PSS rebounds
- Common surcharges: GRI (General Rate Increase), PSS (Peak Season Surcharge), BAF (Bunker Adjustment), LSS (Low Sulfur Surcharge), PCS (Port Congestion Surcharge), ISPS
- USWC-specific: ILWU labor contract cycles, inland intermodal capacity, LA/LGB drayage tightness
- USEC spillover: When Panama Canal water levels disrupt USEC, USWC + inland-rail (IPI) becomes a fallback routing
- Section 301 tariffs: Material in DDP cost calculations for affected HS codes
* We track carrier rate notices and market intel daily and proactively flag booking windows to clients.

9. Frequently Asked Questions
How long does ocean shipping from China to LA or Long Beach take?
FCL direct services typically run 14–18 days; express strings can compress to 12–13 days. LCL adds 7–10 days because of origin consolidation and destination CFS deconsolidation. Actual transit depends on the carrier's port rotation, weather, and California port congestion.
How does Amazon FBA freight work? FCL or LCL?
Ship FCL when a single SKU exceeds ~8–10 CBM (direct truck to California FBA warehouses). Smaller volumes ride LCL with LTL trucking from our LA CFS. We handle ASN/PO upload, FBA labeling, appointment scheduling, and LTL/FTL drayage end-to-end.
Can you do DDP door-to-door to FBA or residential addresses?
Yes — through US customs brokers and trucking partners. Provide HS codes, declared value, and EIN/SSN or FBA shipment ID. For high-tariff categories (some furniture, textiles, Section 301 items), we recommend budgeting tariff cost upfront.
Are USWC ports still congested? Who pays demurrage and detention?
USWC ports have normalized post-2022. Peak season and labor-cycle windows can cause short-term backlogs. Demurrage usually has 4–7 free days; detention runs from discharge to empty return. We actively track milestones to minimize charges; if incurred, they're billed at carrier cost.
Can you ship lithium batteries, textiles, or chemicals to USWC?
Yes. Lithium batteries (UN3480/3481/3090/3091) need MSDS, UN38.3, and DG certification — select carriers accept DG. Textiles must comply with UFLPA cotton-origin documentation. Chemicals are screened by HS code and IMDG. Share product specs and MSDS; we'll confirm carrier acceptance before quoting.
